📜 Our History: Where Empowered Journeys Began
The history of the Epilepsy Foundation Texas is a testament to the power of community, advocacy, and unwavering dedication to ensuring that In Texas, no one faces epilepsy alone.
The Founding Story
The journey began in 1983 with Donna Stahlhut
This grassroots effort led to the founding of the Epilepsy Foundation of Southeast Texas
Growth and Consolidation
Over 40 years, the organization strengthened its reach and impact:
-
2008: The name changed to the Epilepsy Foundation of Texas after expanding service to North Texas when we merge with the local Dallas/Fort Worth area office.
2011: The Foundation combined efforts with the respected 38-year-old Epilepsy Foundation West Texas

This expansion created a stronger, more united force, now serving 176 counties in the state of Texas

The Epilepsy Foundation Texas has led legislation to benefit people with disabilities over the years
- Compassionate Use Act (2015): The Foundation successfully advocated for the Compassionate Use Act in 2015, which allows qualified Texans with intractable epilepsy to legally access low-THC cannabis products, expanding treatment options and improving quality of life for those most in need.
- Sam’s Law (2019): We worked hard to pass Sam’s Law (HB 684) in May 2019, making schools safer for the 50,000 children living with epilepsy in Texas
. This law requires all Texas public school personnel who have regular contact with students to be trained in seizure recognition and first aid . - Health TEKS Revision (2020): In November 2020, the Texas State Board of Education voted to adopt Health Education revisions which include epilepsy awareness and seizure first aid education for grades 2 through high school, starting in the 2022-23 school year
.
Organizational Governance
The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors, made up of officers of two local boards (North and West Texas and South and East Texas), who establish policies and oversee financial operations, planning, and program activities
The Board sets the strategic direction, acts as prudent trustees of contributed funds, and serves as a leadership example through service and personal financial contributions
This incredible legacy continues under the leadership of Chris Justl, our Chief Executive Officer, ensuring that the mission is carried forward to meet the varied needs of people with epilepsy and their loved ones.
