EPILEPSY FOUNDATION TEXAS
Raise your Voice!
Some people still believe that epilepsy is a rare condition. However, it is estimated that more than 3 million people in the United States have epilepsy. When you look at the numbers worldwide, that’s more than 65 million people living with epilepsy. With so many people affected by this condition, it is vital that we raise awareness.
Legislative Victories
The Epilepsy Foundation Texas has led legislation to benefit people with disabilities over the years.
-
Compassionate Use Act (2015): The Foundation successfully advocated for the Compassionate Use Act in 2015, which allows qualified Texans with intractable epilepsy to legally access low-THC cannabis products, expanding treatment options and improving quality of life for those most in need.
-
Sam’s Law (2019): We worked hard to pass Sam’s Law (HB 684) in May 2019, making schools safer for the 50,000 children living with epilepsy in Texas. This law requires all Texas public school personnel who have regular contact with students to be trained in seizure recognition and first aid.
-
Health TEKS Revision (2020): In November 2020, the Texas State Board of Education voted to adopt Health Education revisions which include epilepsy awareness and seizure first aid education for grades 2 through high school, starting in the 2022-23 school year.
